Diesel Generator Set System Types

Diesel Generator Set System Types

While looking for a  Diesel   generator for sale, it is important know how to decide upon the system and rating offers. The Diesel generator set equipment is rated using, standby, prime and continuous ratings. Lately, an industry specific new rating class has been introduced for  Diesel generator sets, Data Center Continuous. It is very important to understand the  Diesel generator set ratings when applying the equipment. Now let's have brief look to these ratings as below.

Emergency Systems

Emergency systems are typically required for public safety and generally required by low. Diesel generator sets are expected to serve to during power outages to provide short term power for safe evacuation of buildings and premises, to critical equipment for vulnerable people and to critical communications network.

Optional Standby

For optional standby systems, Diesel generator sets are required not for safety reasons but mainly to prevent any economic loss or interruption of business activity or simply to avoid any discomfort any inconvenience.  Diesel generator set is required mainly the loads that are listed by the manager or owner of that premises. Standby rating of a Diesel generator sets is the maximum power available during a variable electrical power sequence, under the stated operating conditions, for which a Diesel  generator set is capable of delivering in the event of a utility power outage or under test conditions for up to 200 hrs of operation per year under average of 70% load. Overloading isn’t permissible.

Prime Power

Diesel generator sets are used for prime power installations use on–site generation in lieu of a utility electricity supply, typically where utility power is not available. Diesel generator set is expected to run continuously on variable load. A prime power application will require at least two or more Diesel generator set one to run continuously and the others simply serve as the backup. Each Diesel generator set is also expected to serve a backup to prevent down time during repair and maintenance. Prime rating of a Diesel generator set is the maximum power which a generating set is capable of delivering continuously whilst supplying a variable electrical load. Average load should be 70%. The diesel generator can be overloaded 10% or 1 hour per 12 hrs.

Peak Shaving

Diesel generator sets are also used for  peak shaving applications where the Diesel generator set is expected to feed load replacing the utility to save on energy costs during the peak times. Diesel generator set controller is configured to run the set on specific times of the day.

Continuous Base Load

Diesel generator sets are installed to supply power to the grid through specific interconnection equipment such as synchronization systems and switch gear.
