Data Centre Power Infrastructure: From Generator to Rack Cabinet

Data Centre Power Infrastructure: From Generator to Rack Cabinet

Reliable data centre power is not just about the generator. It is about the complete infrastructure from the point of generation to the point of consumption, and every component in between.

Why Data Centres Demand a Different Approach

Data centres have zero tolerance for power interruption. A momentary voltage dip can crash servers, corrupt data, and trigger cascading failures across interconnected systems. The power infrastructure must not only provide backup generation but must do so with transfer times measured in milliseconds and voltage stability measured in fractions of a percent.

This is a fundamentally different engineering challenge from a standard commercial standby installation.

The Complete Power Chain

EA Power Systems designs and delivers complete data centre power infrastructure, including:

  • Diesel generators - sized and configured for data centre load profiles, including high harmonic content from UPS systems
  • Automatic Transfer Switches - closed transition switching to eliminate any supply interruption during transfer
  • UPS systems - providing instantaneous bridging power during generator start-up
  • Parallel synchronisation panels - for N+1 and N+2 redundancy configurations
  • Remote monitoring - continuous visibility of every parameter across the complete power chain
  • Planned maintenance - keeping every component in the chain performing to specification

The Harmonic Challenge

Data centre UPS systems are significant sources of harmonic distortion. Without proper consideration at the design stage, harmonics can derate generator capacity, cause overheating, and create instability in the supply. EA Power Systems accounts for harmonic loading in every data centre specification, selecting generators and alternators rated for the actual harmonic environment they will operate in.

Commissioning to Data Centre Standards

EA Power commissions data centre power infrastructure to the standards the sector demands. Full load bank testing, ATS transfer time verification, UPS interaction testing, and parallel synchronisation checks are all completed before any system is handed over.
